Galveston officer shoots woman with machete

A woman said to be attacking people with a machete has been shot by Galveston police. FOX 26's Damali Keith has more on how the chaos unfolded.

Galveston police responded to reports of a disturbance on Wednesday morning, leading to an officer-involved shooting near the Resource and Crisis Center shelter.

Chief Douglas Balli confirmed that the incident occurred around 9 a.m. in the intersection of 45th Street and Avenue L.

Officers rushed to the intersection around 9:00 a.m. after someone called 911, saying a woman with a machete was attacking people and had already cut two women inside the Resource and Crisis Center of Galveston.

The caller also told the 911 dispatcher the woman with the machete had already attempted to set a sofa on fire inside the shelter.

"When officers arrived, they observed the suspect chasing at least one and possibly more people down the street. She was wielding a machete at the time, and she began attacking the first officer's police car as he pulled up on her and the victims were able to escape safely," explains Galveston Police Chief Doug Balli. "She turned her attention to the second officer who arrived on the scene and ran towards his car with the machete and began attacking his car. The officer fired his service weapon, striking the suspect at least once."

The woman who was shot was taken to the hospital and is undergoing treatment.

As for the two stabbing victims, the two women who were cut with the machete, one was treated at the scene, the other had to be rushed to the hospital.

While GPD is looking into the disturbance inside the crisis center, Texas Rangers, Galveston County Sheriff's Office and the Galveston County District Attorney's Office are all investigating the officer-involved shooting.
