The Galveston Police Department has released new details that led to a portion of The Strand to be shut down on Wednesday afternoon.

According to officials, a man caused a disturbance when he reportedly punched out the windows of a building.

Just before 4:15 p.m., visitors saw a man on the roof of a building with some sort of a gun, officials said.

After authorities closed off streets in the area, visitors could be seen running away from the building, and some found refuge in nearby stores and the offices of the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce.

The suspect later left the building and was running from police on 23rd Street between Mechanic and Strand when several officers took him to the ground.

Authorities said the man, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, had to be tied down to a gurney and was taken to the emergency center at UTMB Health's John Sealy Hospital.

Officials said no shots were fired and no one required medical attention other than the suspect.

It's unclear what charges the suspect may face as a result of the incident.
