"Water-fasting" is a relatively new trend where people consume nothing but water for several days—or even weeks—at a time. It's become so popular on social media people are using "#waterfast" on social media.
Nutritionists say this is the same thing as starvation and warn that the negative benefits outweigh the positive ones. Despite an initial drop in weight, prolonged fasting slows metabolism and digestion over time. It can also cause extreme hunger, fatigue, dizziness and even fainting.
Instead, experts suggest a healthy, sustainable diet for those trying to shed a few pounds.
