Cursive handwriting resurrection in Texas schools

Cursive handwriting will be making a comeback in Texas classrooms.

The State Board of Education made the change to bring penmanship back to Texas schools in 2017, but it will begin to be implemented in the 2019-2020 school year starting with second grade students.

According to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for second grade language arts and reading, students are expected to "develop handwriting by accurately forming all cursive letters using appropriate strokes when connecting letters."

Cursive was omitted for a lot of reasons, the greatest being the digital age we live in, but advocates fought for it to be added back into the curriculum, challenging that the fluid motion of the handwriting style enhances hand-eye coordination and helps develop fine motor skills.
