What we know:
Capital One has confirmed that the outage is tied to a technical issue involving a third-party vendor.
The disruption is impacting a range of customers, including those in the consumer, small business, and commercial banking sectors. In a statement posted on X, the company said, "We are actively working with the vendor to resolve the issue and restore services, and apologize for the inconvenience."
Fidelity National Information Systems, Capital One's third-party vendor which provides credit card processing, and an array of other solutions that support banking services, sent FOX 5 a statement saying: "FIS confirms that we are working to restore the applications that were impacted by a local area power outage at one of our data centers. Our clients’ success is at the center of everything we do, and we are working with the highest urgency to restore all impacted applications as soon as possible. We apologize for the impact this is having on our clients and the customers they serve."
Capital One sent customers an email Thursday evening stating they expect services to gradually begin to return to normal throughout the night and the majority of issues to be resolved by Friday morning.
"Once the systems are restored, we will process all deposits and other transactions that have been delayed," the message reads.
What we don't know:
The specific nature of the technical issue remains unclear.
It is also unknown how many customers nationwide have been affected by the disruption. Additionally, Capital One has not disclosed whether the issue has led to any security or fraud-related concerns.
Big picture view:
The outage comes a day after Citibank experienced access issues for mobile accounts and ongoing problems with fraud alerts. Earlier this month, Capital One was sued by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, alleging it misled customers about savings accounts—an allegation the bank has denied.
