Katy man who lived in California for 18 years, opens his home to wildfire victims

After 18 years, Rob Greer is opening his heart and home to those in need.

" I kept saying ‘wow’. Like we are watching the news and wow, wow, Oh my God wow," Greer said. "I’ve seen a lot of disasters and devastation over the years and this looks more horrific than anything I’ve ever seen."

Rob Greer moved to Houston in 2019 after spending 18 years living in Pasadena, Calif., and Downtown Los Angeles.

He says seeing the images of a community he loves on fire is hard.

"However, my home where I lived in Pasadena is under a warning," Greer said. "The fires did reach an area where I used to walk my dog every day, so I know those homes on the street where I used to walk my dog every day, those homes are gone."

Greer said the areas where the fire has engulfed many homes he knows well.

"As a photographer in Los Angeles, I obviously worked a lot of venues in the Palisades and Malibu, and many of those are burned," said Greer.

Greer adds that many of his friends have lost everything.

"Most of my friends who talk about it use the words ‘apocalyptic,’" said Greer. "I just spoke to a friend a few minutes ago who said her child's school burned down."

Greer says his friends in LA don’t know what’s next, which is why he decided to open up his doors to those who need a place to stay.

"I’m more than happy to host my friends here, even if they are just casual Facebook friends. If they need that place to stay, we have two guest rooms, happy to offer that to them," said Greer," I think that if we look at what we think about as Houstonians compared to Los Angeles, they have families, friends’ homes, lives, and they are as impacted as we are when we have a hurricane."

Greer says he understands that the trip is far during this time, but he wanted to extend a hand just in case.
