HOUSTON - The Houston Fire Department announced charges were filed in relation to the deadly warehouse fire that killed Houston firefighter Marcelo "Ox" Garcia III.
Yesenia Mendez, 38, will face a first degree arson charge for the fire located at 6536 Supply Row, according to officials.
A small memorial marks the spot where Houston firefighter Garcia lost his life battling a warehouse. Garcia was killed when a wall suddenly collapsed during the blaze.

"We’re all hurting as a class. We hurt as a department. We’re hurting as a community," said Abby Cortez of the Houston Fire Department.
Garcia was 42-years-old and was with the department for 10 years. He spent his last six years at Station 23.

A search through the Harris County District Clerk’s website reveals Mendez has a lengthy criminal history. Court records show in 2005 Mendez was charged with theft of under $500. In the same year, she was charged with her first DWI. Four years later, in 2009, Mendez was charged with possession of cocaine. In 2015, she was charged with her 2nd DWI and in 2021, she was charged with assault causing bodily injury. She pleaded guilty to the charge just last year. Now, Mendez is facing charges for arson causing bodily injury or death for the fire that took the life of Marcelo Garcia.

In a statement, the Houston Professional Firefighters Association said:
"We are heartbroken and angry to learn that the fire that took the life of one of our own was a deliberate act of arson. the loss has deeply affected our firefighter family, and while we are relieved an arrest has been made, nothing can truly bring solace to those who knew and loved our fallen brother. We extend our gratitude to the investigators who worked tirelessly to find answers and bring justice. As always, we remain committed to honoring the bravery and sacrifice of our firefighters who risk their lives daily to protect the community."

The City of Houston is continuing to pay tribute to the fallen firefighter by lighting city hall red in his honor.
HFD said that Mendez has been arrested and booked in the Harris County Jail. Funeral arrangements for Marcelo Garcia are pending.
