COVINA, CA (FOX 11) - Warning Graphic Images:
San Dimas deputies rescued a small kitten Thursday morning after it had been trapped in an illegal steel jawed trap for two days.
It happened in the backyard of a Covina home in the 4000 block of Conlon Ave.
“We got a call from a citizen earlier in the day, at that time she said she’s been hearing a cat crying for about two days now,” said Deputy Jose Mora. “So when we got there we looked over the neighbors fence and we could see the cat laying on the floor next to the fence with a paw stuck inside the trap.”
Mora said nobody answered the door at the home, so they hopped the fence to tend to the cat, using screwdrivers to free it’s paw from the trap.
“The whole time the cat was crying so we knew it was still alive,” he said. “The paw looked like it was broken in two.”
Deputies wrapped the kitten in a blanket and waited for animal control to arrive and take it into their possession.
Mora said the type of steel trap that was used is illegal.
“It is illegal to have those, they have newer types of traps now that are made of harder plastic, you don’t really see those metal traps anymore these days,” he said.
There was no answer when FOX 11 knocked on the homeowners door.
The cat was taken to a vet for care with a severe injury, and it’s current condition is unknown.
