HOUSTON (FOX 26) - She owns a 4.1 GPA, is number two in her class, loves math and science, and she's a three-sport star who happens to have a nice jump shot.
" I love to win. I love to play the game. I love to compete. I love to debate. I love all of that. I just love to compete,” Doris Crisp says.
Wheatley High School senior Doris Crisp competes by balancing academics and athletics. She is the captain of her girls basketball, softball and volleyball teams. How does she get it all done?
“After school I have practice. After practice, I go straight home, probably do two hours of homework, but I make sure I finish it, and then shower, eat, sleep, do it all over again,” Crisp says.
She is well-liked, trusted, and respected by her teachers, coaches, and teammates for her ability to lead, balance academics and athletics.
“She's the true definition of scholar athlete. The same ethics, drive she shows in the classroom, she brings those same ethics and drives to the court, baseball field and all the athletic arenas she plays in," says girls head softball coach Paul Richard.
To me she has an old soul like she's been here before. She reminds me of some of my older players who were great as far as being a great leader,” says girls head basketball coach Dedrick Carr, Sr.
Crisp also has an understanding of Wheatley’s rich history and the many late legendary leaders who have passed through those doors -- names like Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, Congressman Mickey Leland, and legendary attorney and law professor Otis King.
“They attended Wheatley and they made something out of themselves, they made an example. So that’s what really inspired me.”
Crisp says there’s a reason why she pushes so hard.
“The people around me, my godfather, my mom, seeing my mom struggle, she always motivated me to do better and be better. My sister, my brother, they just always wanted me to do better. My coaches, they always encouraged me and talked to me, not just about sports, talk to you about life. I just want to be great," Crisp says.
While she’s off to a great start, Crisp has a lighter side and a hobby that most are aware -- culinary skills.
"I like to cook anything. It's food. I just eat it. But mainly I like to cook pasta. That's like quick and easy. Quick so I can get it in my stomach," Crisp says.
“She’s funny all the time. Especially when she’s hungry,” asst. volleyball coach Britt Trahan says.
Trahan says there’s no better leader on the volleyball court.
“She knows the game inside and out. She can tell you where your position needs to be, what you should be doing. She can tell whoever on the floor, where they need to be, how they need to. She's a setter, a very good setter. She knows where you need to have it and when you need to get it.
Crisp wants to major in Kinesiology and play volleyball at a nearby university once she graduates.
