Woman charged in deadly vehicle-bicycles crash

Gerilyn Weberlein

A woman has been arrested and charged with intoxication assault after investigators say she drove into a group of bicyclists in Galveston. One of those bicycle riders has died and the charge against her may be upgraded.

A preliminary investigation determined that Gerilyn Weberlein, 50, showed signs of intoxication following the crash on Monday night and was taken to UTMB after police obtained a warrant for her blood.

After the crash was reported near the intersection of 69th Street and Weiss Drive, first responders found two people had been struck by a vehicle. The bicycles had reflectors but no lights.

The two injured men, both 23 years old, were taken by Galveston EMS to the UTMB John Sealy emergency room. One of them died on Tuesday morning from his injuries while the other suffered a broken arm, cuts and abrasions.

Bond has been set for Weberlein at $100,000. Police are working with the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the charge against her will be upgraded. The name of the man who died will not been released until his next of kin is notified.
