NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - A stolen Chevy Trailblazer SUV speeding on the Meadowbrook State Parkway on Long Island crashed into a marsh Friday morning. Three teenagers were ejected from the SUV and died, New York State Police said.
Many questions remain unanswered: Where were 10 people inside the stolen SUV going and why was a 15-year-old behind the wheel?
Helicopters flew over the crash scene as investigators searched for bodies.
One witness in a car told police that said the SUV came up behind them at high speed and then swerved around them.
The driver was a 15-year-old girl from Uniondale. She weaved in and out of traffic before losing control, police said. She and five other teens between 13 and 18 along with an 8-month-old infant survived. Investigators said the SUV did not have enough seat belts to safely fit 10 people.
The truck was reported stolen from Roosevelt on Thursday. Police were not pursuing the SUV at the time of the crash, officials said.
At least one person is in critical condition at Nassau University Medical Center. The infant is expected to be OK.
