Review expands to more than 2,000 cases, 2nd officer identified

The Harris County District Attorney's Office will expand its ongoing review to include at least 800 cases linked to Houston Police Department Officer Steven Bryant during his career, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said Monday.

The increase follows the Feb. 20 announcement that prosecutors are reviewing more than 1,400 cases related to HPD Officer Gerald Goines, who was relieved of duty last month.

“We have a duty to the people of Harris County to pursue justice in every instance, no matter how many cases this involves,” said Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg. “We are going to thoroughly review each of these cases to ensure that the arrests and convictions were proper.”

Ogg said that it is too soon to know just how many cases will be reviewed as part of the probe based on the officer-involved shooting on Harding Street.

HCDAO is contacting individual defense lawyers of the review to ensure that they have a chance to independently review potential defenses.

Prosecutors are also notifying defense lawyers that a hold has been placed on resolving the cases pending the conclusion of the review.

Of the cases linked to former officer Bryant, approximately 30 are currently pending in court.
