Police: Man stabbed woman to death, turned knife on himself

At a nondescript Houston apartment complex, like hundreds of other permeating our city, an episode of human misery unfolded at about 8:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Inside the southeast side unit, a woman and her common law husband, believed to be Honduran immigrants, were found bleeding.

Xavier Alejandro Martinez, 25, would make it to the hospital alive. Josselin Yamileth, 32, would not.

"Some family members living in the complex heard some small children crying. They alerted the dad. Ended up coming through the window that was open into the apartment and got the children out. They're fine. They're safe," said Detective Kent Fregia of the Houston Police Department.

The two children, both under the age of 10, were trapped in the dwelling as their mother was stabbed to death.

Police believe Martinez then turned a knife on himself. He was taken to Ben Taub for emergency surgery.

Investigators say interviews with family and neighbors revealed no apparent motive.

"If and when we can talk to him at the hospital, we might find out some more there," said Fregia.
