Houston shooting: Woman found dead on E 36th; man injured

Houston police are investigating after a woman was found dead and a possible suspect was found injured on Friday morning, officials say.

The shooting investigation is underway in the 700 block of East 36th Street, in the Independence Heights neighborhood of north Houston.

According to Assistant Chief Megan Howard, officers received a call about a shooting at a home in the address above. There was a reported disturbance between a woman and a man who lived at the home with other family members and their 2-year-old child.

Officials said when they arrived, the woman was found dead in the back of the home with gunshot wounds. Witnesses on the scene reported the man left the home on a bike with their young child.

Other police officers in the area noticed a man fitting the description on a bike with a child, and when they approached him to investigate, the man pulled out a pistol and shot himself, according to Howard.

Houston Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene and took the man to the hospital where he was last reported to be in surgery.

The 2-year-old was unharmed and placed under the care of family members.

According to Asst. Chief Howard, the shooting is under investigation and authorities recovered the weapon.
