2 teens injured in vehicle-train crash

Two teens are injured after a vehicle-train crash in Fort Bend County.

Texas Department of Public Safety officials say it happened around 5 p.m. Friday and it had traffic in the area at a virtual standstill for hours. The 19-year-old driver and his passenger, a minor, were in the mangled car.

DPS troopers say the teens were traveling northbound on FM 762.

According to the preliminary investigation, officials say the train gave at least the required five seconds to a quarter-of-a-mile warning as it was approaching the intersection, and the arms were functioning fine. Troopers believe instead of stopping, the young driver may have tried to beat the train.

"There's a reason there's a state law that school buses have to stop at every railroad crossing when loaded and there's a reason why every truck tractor that's loaded with specific chemicals have to stop, because this is serious, and someone can seriously get hurt," says Texas DPS Sgt. Stephen Woodard. "Again, both individuals have been transported to the hospital and this particular incident is still under investigation."

The teens remain at Memorial Hermann Hospital and according to the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office, one teen is in critical condition while the other is in stable condition.

The investigation is continuing.
