Voters gather to watch Cruz-O'Rourke debate at Houston-area bars

Some people in the Houston area have mixed views about who they were voting for after this first debate.

Liberty Station opened its doors on Friday night and even served debate-themed cocktails for visitors wanting to see Congressman Beto O’Rourke take on incumbent U.S. Senator Ted Cruz. The moderators presented questions about kneeling during the national anthem, the confirmation process for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, gun laws, health care and a 1998 conviction.

“You know I think they had a really good choice of all the topics like you know obviously I am voting for Beto but they brought up the DWI and he responded which I thought was great,” says Kathryn Brooks.

James Lamont tells FOX 26 News he enjoyed hearing about immigration after coming to the U.S. almost two years ago.

"Going through the actual process is something that I really believe in, so my process took 2 1/2 years for me to come into the country, so anyone that is here illegally, I’ve kind of got the point of that although they are an immigrant, I feel like they should go through the right process,” adds Lamont.

At the end of the debate, many people still wanted to hear about foreign policy.

"Whichever candidate is less in favor of bombing people in other countries, I’ll probably be in favor of them, I’ll probably support them, but my guess is it’ll probably O’Rourke," says Eamon Stewart.

"I have some concerns about Cruz’s past comments on foreign policy, so I really want to hear him maybe his change his mind or something like that and I’m not really familiar with Beto‘s position on foreign policy but I’m curious for that," says Daniel Roog.

The next debate between Sen. Cruz and U.S. Rep. O'Rourke will be in Houston on Sept. 30. The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 9.
