Houston Marathon & Half Marathon road closures

The Houston Marathon will take place on Sunday but there will be road closures in place for most of the weekend so you will want to know before you go.

The race will mostly be inside the 610 Loop, but the road closures in place now are in downtown Houston near the George R. Brown Convention Center, specifically, Avenida De Las Americas and Lamar. Congress, Corral, San Jacinto and Fannin will also shut down during the weekend.

The race itself will have tons of road closures throughout the City of Houston. If you are not participating in any of the events, you want to avoid inside the Loop in downtown Houston, the Houston Heights, the Montrose district and Rice Village. Try sticking to the major roadways if you will be traveling.

Here are some of the road closures that will take place Sunday for the race. It'll start at Congress and San Jacinto and continue down Washington Street through the Montrose district. It'll cross under the Southwest Freeway and make its way to Rice Village, so you'll want to avoid University Boulevard and then Weslayan. It'll make its way just outside the Loop to Post Oak Boulevard then over to Chimney Rock Road and finally through Memorial Drive back to downtown Houston and finishing at Lamar and Crawford.

METRORail will be offering free rides for all runners wearing a bib. Keeping in mind some routes will be affected. From 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 a.m. Sunday, morning service will be suspended at Preston Station and UH Downtown Station.

From 6 a.m. until 2 p.m., service will be suspended at the Main Street Square Station. Keep in mind to expect delays on the Green and Purple Lines.

Be sure to allow yourself extra time if you are running in the race or cheering on the athletes and if you aren't then you may want to avoid these areas especially on Sunday.
