Man accused of kicking pregnant woman's stomach, killing unborn child
PONTIAC, Mich. (FOX 2) - A Pontiac man was arrested for killing his girlfriend's unborn child after allegedly kicking her stomach.
"I just heard a lady screaming," said neighbor Jawana Milton. "I jumped out of my bed and looked out the window, the lady was still screaming and then the Police pulled up."
Those screams allegedly happened at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning in Pontiac.
A 19-year-old woman told police she was in severe pain because her boyfriend kicked her in the stomach, several times -- after an argument. at an apartment on Leonard Lane.
The boyfriend fled, and was quickly taken into custody by sheriffs' deputies. Kahlil Ellison, 22, of Pontiac, is the victim's boyfriend.
"(The argument) was something over a cell phone," said Paul Walton, Oakland County assistant prosecutor.
The woman was six months pregnant. Paramedics rushed her to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for medical treatment. However, doctors, tried to save the unborn child but it was pronounced dead.
"It's kind of a unique charge situation," Walton said. "The statute is the death or injury to an unborn fetus."
FOX 2: "Why wouldn't you charge this defendant with murder, the fetus died?"
"Because the legislator has said that this is the appropriate charge for this circumstance," Walton said. "And it is basically a murder conviction."
One of the neighbors said the victim has moved out, she is now living with her mother, she doesn't want to talk. But she is still in a lot of pain.
"Something like 85 percent of all murders in Oakland County started from a domestic assault," Walton said.
And this case, Walton says, is a domestic assault. Ellison is behind bars, unable to post his million-dollar bond. If convicted, he is looking it up to life in prison.
