66 Houston fire cadets sworn in after Prop B ruled unconstitutional

After Proposition B was ruled unconstitutional, 66 Houston fire cadets were finally sworn in after months of uncertainty.

Although they will be starting their new jobs as soon as Saturday, the ruling calls into question the firefighter raises already issued, as well as those who were demoted or given layoff notices.

Due to these complications, the Firefighters Union has filed an appeal in response to the ruling.

Prop B is the voter approved measure that grants Houston firefighters the same pay as police of corresponding rank and seniority. Mayor Sylvester Turner argues the pay raises would cost the city $80 million a year and forced the layoffs of 200 firefighters, 67 cadets, and 47 municipal workers, all of which have been cancelled.
